Does ProTempus require a server on our network?

No - In fact we prefer peer-to-peer networks.

Servers tend to be overworked in most offices. Placing a database on a server can actually slow down ProTempus. If your office has a server, to provide the best performance, we recommend that you install the ProTempus database on a dedicated Windows Pro workstation. We use Sql Express database, which runs great on a Windows Pro OS with a Quad CPU and 6GB of RAM. This type of computer can be purchased from any retail store for less than $800.

Does ProTempus store my client's data on the cloud?

No, your data is not stored on the cloud. You data remains secure on your local computers, behind your firewall. Below we discuss how to verify your firewall is block hackers from your system..

Do I need new computers?

No, usually ProTempus will run great on your current hardware.

We require Windows 7 or better.

We recommend at least a dual CPU system, with 2GB of RAM and at least 250 GB hard drive. If your network has more than 4 computers, we recommend at least one of the computers have a quad CPU with at least 6 GB of RAM. We will install the database on the computer with the most RAM.

Do I need a local IT person?

If you have a local IT support person, we will work directly with them to install and tune your system for the best possible performance. Many of our clients do not have a local IT person. If someone in your office is comfortable unboxing a computer and plugging it into your network, you are good to go. Once you can connect to the internet, you will install TeamViewer from our website and connect us to your computer. We will take care of the rest. For small offices, it only takes about 10 minutes per computer to install ProTempus. For larger offices, we need an additional hour to install the Sql Express software and set up the database.

Will ProTempus run on my Mac?

Several of our clients run ProTempus on their Macs. You must have at least one Windows computer in your network to house the database. You can run ProTempus on Macs by using Parallels or another Windows emulator.

How much training is required?

Our normal training time for your staff is 1 hour with two to three short follow-up sessions during the first month. We normally spend ten to fifteen minutes training attorneys on billing their time and managing their calendars. We recommend a ten-minute follow-up session when you create your first set of invoices at the end of the first month.

How do I backup ProTempus?

You will need to add the ProTempus folder to your normal daily backups. If you do not have a backup procedure in place we will help you set one up. Many of our client' backup to USB drives or thumb drives. We recommend 2 drives, which allow you to alternate backups and keep an offsite backup, without backing up to the cloud. Hardware-encrypted drives provide the best security if your offsite drive is stolen or lost.

No. If you decide ProTempus is not a good fit for your office, you can discontinue your ProTempus lease with a 30-day notice.

You can reprint invoices, access existing contact information, etc. We will also provide you with the ProTempus database password, which would allow you to export any data to a spreadsheet or any other format required.

Exporting your data from Credenza? In talking to the Credenza support team, "since the product is being discontinued", they will unlock your Sql database allowing you access to all of your data. Email a copy of your Credenz.sdf file to Cloudsupport@amicusattoney.com. They will remove the password from the database and return the file. This will allow the ProTempus team access your case data which they will load into your ProTempus system.

Can I add or remove timekeepers?

Yes, this requires a five minute call to our office. Once you provide us with a password to connect to your system, we will make any need changes and adjust your monthly bill.

Can I access ProTempus Remotely?

Yes, with the use of a third party software.

SplashTop, Teamviewer and LogMeIn are three packages we have tested. All three, of these use a relay technic that allow you easy access to your ProTempus and all other software on your office computer without exposing your system to hackers. They do not require you open any ports on your computer, which is one of the primary ways hackers attack a computer. These programs connect using an outgoing connection to the vendor's computer. From your remote device, which can be a laptop, a tablet of a smart phone, you will also connect to their server. This connection will transmit images of your desktop's screen, to the remote device and keyboard entries and mouse clicks from your remote device. No documents or any data is ever transmitted over the internet. Your data never leaves your desktop computer.

How can I verify my system is secure?

Gibson Research provides a free security check that will verify that your routers firewall is working properly. Click here to view step-by-step instructions on running a security check on your system. You should also run anti-virus software on each computer. We recommend Microsoft Security Essentials. It does not bog down your computer and provides good protection and best of all, it is free. Windows 8 has Windows Defender (the new name for Security Essentials) built into the operating system. Most new computers come with a free trial anti-virus from a third party, usually Nortons or McAfee. We do not recommend either of those products, and recommend uninstalling them and turning on Windows Defender. They tend to have very high overhead. AVG is a better option if you do not like Windows Defender.

Finally, we recommend safe computing. Click here for tips on safe computing from MIT.
